Advocating our Differences Snapchat Filter/Geofilter Creation
Snapchat filters are special overlays that communicate the “where and when” of a Snap in a fun way, whether you're sending it to a friend or adding it to your Story. Snapchat Geofilters are specific to neighborhoods and special locations. There are event filters and recently they added filter design purchasing.
I finally created a Snapchat account on my recent trip to San Francisco. I have Facebook and Twitter and have never felt the need to create a Snapchat account even though my 2 teenage daughters have had it for a couple years. So why was I so excited to download the App and start using it? For the filters!!! Yes I wanted to use the San Francisco Geofilters (The painted ladies from Full House is my favorite!) and the Superbowl 50 event filters, Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc.. An added bonus is being able to post embarrassing videos to my story so my daughter's friends can view. By the way, Snapchat videos are currently at 7 billion views a day and Snapchat is catching up to Twitter and Instagram as the most preferred social media app among teens. What better way to explore our differences and advocate for acceptance than through designing our own Snapchat filter.
Students will form groups of 2-3 and discuss how we are all different. Looking at the list of attributes below, discuss with your group members any of the characteristics you are comfortable discussing. How does this characteristic impact your life? What values/beliefs are most important in your life based on these attributes?
Gender/Sex
Ethnicity
Ancestral Heritage
Current or Previous neighborhoods you may have lived
Religion
Cultural Traditions
Economic Class
Disability
Select one of the attributes that your group cares about or each group member can design their own. Groups will collaborate through the design process for constructive feedback. For example, one of our students who has Autism may want to design a filter celebrating his/her unique characteristics or one of our new students from Mexico may want to create a filter displaying some of their traditions back home or the region they lived. You may want to create a filter to celebrate your religious beliefs or to support female rights in countries where this is an issue. We have a couple students from San Diego and they may want to create a geofilter based on the neighborhood they lived.
Once you decide on your Snapchat filter/geofilter attribute you will be designing, you need to conduct additional research. Remember that the appeal of a filter is widespread use. You are not designing for yourself. For example, if you are Jewish and are creating a filter to represent the Jewish religion, you need to do additional research past your own family's practice or beliefs. What are the signs and symbols of the religion? If you selected a location, what are the physical attributes of the location? You will use PIXLR to create your image. You must click to make it transparent and save as a PNG file following the guidelines below:
